Hardware
Physics, the Xperia Neo is a relatively small phone for research. It is built mainly of black plastic, which is characterized by silver trim and buttons. Although something of a magnet for fingerprints, the chassis is strong enough and survived their two weeks of our primary unit raises obvious shock or scratches. Of course it's not as pretty as the Arc (far from, actually), but the New Xperia is not a phone attractive. The design is not to turn heads, but it is functional and well built.
Like the bow, there are three physical buttons - Start Menu back and - on the device display. The remaining power buttons, volume and the camera is placed at the right edge of the phone. The Neo also features the same 8-megapixel Exmor R as its big brother, it's great to see. The arc device is among the best we've tested, so we hope to use the same technology on a Sony Ericsson mid-range phone. In addition, there is a basic VGA camera on front for video calls, something that is present in the Thu Xperia but without the bow.
At the top of Neo is where you find all the different ports. There is the usual speaker jack and micro USB port and a micro-HDMI connectivity to allow high definition - another feature premium is still absent in many high-end smartphones. Unlike the arc, but there is no HDMI cable.
Xperia Neo LCD screen is 3.7 inch wheel Super-resolution 854x480. It also includes Sony's Bravia Engine Mobile, which will help to improve the contrast and reduce noise during video playback. As we talked about the Arc again, the difference is noticeable, but subtle. Although it is technically similar to the Arc of the screen, we found evidence Neon were not as bright. During '(completely unscientific) test, we noticed that the display of neon at 100% brightness was roughly the same span with brightness at 50%. Despite this, we had no real problems using the Neo outdoors in full sun.

Internally, the Neo is almost identical to the Xperia Arc. It is the same generation chip 1 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon seconds, 512 MB RAM and 512 MB of internal memory, 380MB of which is available for application use. Proven technology, but there is nothing that stands out from the crowd. In particular, we would have liked to see more than 512 MB of internal flash memory, for even mid-range devices are shipping more than 1 GB. But the fact that reaching almost 400 MB reserved for their own applications means that the situation is not as bad as you might think. And there's always the option to install applications on the 8 GB microSD card delivery anyway.
Finally, we had no problems for voice calls on the good old Neo. Cell reception is comparable to other smart phones, and call quality is clear, without significant problems.
Software
Neo Xperia software is more or less identical to the Arc - you get Android Gingerbread 2.3.3 out of the box, with custom user interface of Sony Ericsson. Like other phones Xperia 2011, beating the software without apparent lag or slowdown. Many high-end phones and even dual-core continue to struggle with the software and the performance of the home screen, but fortunately, the Xperia Neo has this nailed. We found the user experience was smooth and fast at any time.
In addition, some 're-skin the store for Android applications, Neo boasts of additional multimedia functions, such as a DLNA compatible with streaming application, and TrackID music recognition. As I said, is a full HDMI support too, but you must provide your own cable. Once this is done, the mirror over HDMI working properly, the applications lock horizontally and send the signal to 720p.
Like all Sony Ericsson phones, the software interfaces with the PC manufacturer Neo Companion provides an easy way to keep your device to update and synchronize your personal data. This includes Sony MediaGo application that helps with the task to get your own music and video content loaded onto the device.

Neo also allows media to be moved and the SD card without disconnecting and reconnecting in "USB mode", as most of the Android phones to call. This is a great feature, and eliminating a lot of effort that is usually accompanied by the media to get to and from an Android device.
Sony Ericsson has recently launched "Inside Facebook Xperia," a collection of software features designed to provide greater integration of Facebook for its range of Android phones. This has happened with the Xperia Xperia bow and play as a software update, and comes preloaded on the Neo. Additional functionality can be seen in several applications of the phone inventory. Contact information is synchronized with Facebook, and updates the status and photos are available on the right the contacts application. The music player also includes a "How" button, so you can share songs with your friends on Facebook more easily. And the Facebook photos are available at the gallery for easy viewing. All relatively minor changes separately, but together they make the experience more connected smart phones.
Battery
Xperia Neo ships with a 1500 mAh battery, as the Xperia Arc. Since he is on the same house with a smaller screen, you would expect battery life a little better Neo. And you would be right, although the gains are not as overwhelming as you might expect. While the Arc will give you a full day of normal use before he expired, our tests found that New is frequently passed the threshold of 24 hours but hit the mark critical battery 10% early in the second day.
Battery life depends on usage patterns, but unless the average day is always taking an 8-megapixel photos and 720p video using neon rear view camera, you must usually make the evening free.
Camera
We have already heaped praise on Arc 8 megapixel sensor Xperia Neo is exactly the same, producing still images and videos phenomenal big you will see in the examples below. By default, the camera is set to beginner-friendly "scene of the automatic" mode, trying to understand what you shoot and adjust settings accordingly. For more advanced users there is a multitude of options to allow fine-tuning options for image stabilization, white balance and modes of development.
The video camera for recording clear images with resolutions up to 720p, regardless of lighting conditions. Even in low light, the rate has remained stable and were impressed by the quality of the image. Usually, they filmed a little softer looking for Neo (the Arc) and a camera 1080 as the feeling of HTC and Samsung Galaxy S II, however, Sony Exmor R exceeds both hands down low light.
Hackability
If you buy a SIM free Xperia Neo is not locked to a specific airline, you can unlock the bootloader and tinker away to your heart's content. The phone was recently launched in Europe itself, and has not seen a North American version, so there is not much of a community development at the moment. So for the moment that you have to do with the stock Sony Ericsson / Gingerbread user interface, but in future it is likely that we will see more custom ROM unlocked SE phones, including the Arc and Neo.
Wrap-up
Xperia Neo Mini |
Screen size aside, the main thing will be sacrificed if you choose the Arch is more than aesthetic Xperia Neo - Neo is a bit 'sloppy compared to the thinner, more beautiful brother. But this is balanced by the fact that a similar feature set offers the most affordable € 300 (SIM free) price. It makes it very attractive to the average level of the device really.
